Position Title: Assistant Band Director 2024-2025 (part-time)
Reports to: Head of Upper School and Head of Middle School

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Walker School is seeking a part-time Assistant Band Director to support the instruction of our Middle and Upper School bands for 20 hours per week. Opportunities also exist for helping to lead extracurricular band activities (pep band, jazz band, etc.) for an additional stipend.
QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS
The ideal candidate will be energetic, creative, and dedicated to instilling a passion for instrumental music in middle and high school students. Walker teachers are known for combining high expectations with a deep care and empathy for their students. They must have a growth mindset, be open to feedback and improvement, and model lifelong learning of practice as well as their subject area.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Support each student's skill development, musical appreciation, and capability through rehearsals and performances.
Assist in delivering the band curriculum and be ready to lead in the band director’s absence.
Provide individualized instruction on instruments, monitor student progress, and offer personalized support.
Assist in choosing music for performances to enhance students' musical technique, understanding, and appreciation.
Help prepare all bands for performances and their annual music festival.
Collaborate on the administrative support of the band program, including inventory, purchases, instrument check-out, report cards, and music library.
CORE QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in Music or Music Education. Preference will be given to candidates with a Master’s degree or advanced coursework.
Proficiency in brass, woodwind, and percussion instrument performance
Demonstrated excellence in music instruction and band directing
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an eye for detail and clarity
Ability to collaborate within a dynamic performing arts environment
Demonstrated commitment to The Walker School’s mission and core values
Desire to be part of a vibrant and active faculty
