Part-Time Associate Judge - Probate Court

Job Summary:

The essential function of this position is to act as an Associate Judge under the authority of the Judge of the Probate Court. The incumbent is responsible for conducting judicial hearings and reviewing and executing legal filings and orders in the absence of the appointed Judge. Other responsibilities include developing and implementing policies and procedures and reporting critical information to necessary parties.

Work Schedule:
This part-time position requires 16 hours per week, scheduled across 2 days per week (one of which will be a designated court day). Determining which two days are worked will be considered and discussed during the hiring process.

Example of Duties

  • Prepares for and conducts judicial hearings on behalf of the Court, adhering to applicable standards, policies, regulations, and statutes.
  • Reviews legal filings and prepares orders regarding the management of files in the Probate Court office.
  • May assist supervising staff with employee selection process training, training, work assignments, assigning and evaluating work, counseling, preparing or commenting on employee performance evaluations and disciplinary action.
  • Meets with members of the public and/or legal community, including other courts, to address issues that relate to or impact Probate Court.
  • Reviews legal publications and research cases to remain educated regarding changes in probate law; evaluates and addresses impact of potential legal or regulatory changes on the organization.
  • Directs or participates in the preparation, review, and submittal of a variety of reports, promotional materials, communications, and/or statements to and from internal departments, financial institutions, and external agencies.
  • Responds to requests for information and provides subject matter expertise to other departments, consumers, the general public, and/or outside agencies.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Training and Experience
Positions in this class require:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States;
  • Must be a registered voter;
  • Must have attained the age of 25 years ;
  • Must hold a Juris Doctorate Degree;
  • Minimum seven years of the practice of law;
  • Must be a member in good standing of the Georgia Bar Association
  • Has not been convicted of a felony offense or any involving moral turpitude

Licensing Requirements :

  • Valid Driver's License in State of Residency
  • Must be appointed by order and sworn in.

Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits for most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

Incumbents may be subjected to disruptive people, imminent danger, threatening environment, peril at home and threats to private safety, and travel.
