Job Description

 

Summary

Johnson & Wales University seeks a dynamic, creative and innovative leader to serve as the executive director of development. Reporting to the Vice President of Advancement & Alumni Relations, the executive director is responsible for leading the strategic planning, goal setting, professional development and performance of the university’s development team, including major gifts and leadership annual giving, in support of the university’s strategic fundraising goals; and is responsible for securing major and principal gifts in support of the university by developing and implementing effective strategies and portfolio management.

Essential Job Functions

  • Leads the planning and execution of fundraising goals and universitywide strategic initiatives
  • Develops the department's overall fundraising metrics to meet the established goals and metrics driving efficiency and maximizing philanthropic support
  • Oversees the quality and quantity of development activities to result in prospect identification and assessment, cultivation strategies and successful solicitation
  • Secures major and principal gifts in support of the university by developing and implementing effective solicitation strategies and portfolio management of a portfolio consisting of individuals, corporations and foundations
  • Partners with the campus community to identify and leverage opportunities to increase overall giving
  • Partners with staff and others on solicitations by providing prospect briefings, strategic guidance, and assistance with donor communications
  • Provides counsel to the development team as a strategic thought partner
  • Promotes and facilitates a collaborative environment throughout Advancement & Alumni Relations to maximize engagement and philanthropic opportunity in support of the university’s strategic mission
  • Maintains knowledge of procedures and laws governing fundraising activities and promulgate internal and external standards and policies to maintain compliance
  • Supervises and develops the department staff, facilitating professional opportunities to improve individual capability and managing performance against job accountabilities, department goals and established university, campus and department policies and procedures
  • Prepares and monitors departmental budget
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree
  • Significant amount of experience working in major gift fundraising, development or other related experience

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree 
  • Knowledge of Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge
