At the Y, we create an exciting, safe camp environment for kids and staff to have an unforgettable summer. While campers participate in unique experiences and adventures, our Summer Day Camp Unit Leaders develop leadership skills and confidence while making lasting friendships and memories.

Pay starts at $18.45 per hour, Monday-Friday schedule

The Summer Day Camp Unit Leader serves as a professional role model by overseeing recreational activities in their assigned groups, guiding campers and counselors, and leading by example.

Responsibilities of a Summer Camp Unit Leader

  • Promote the YMCA, provide excellent customer service, and create an outstanding camper experience.
  • Lead recreational activities, including arts and crafts, sports, hikes, and more.
  • Instruct campers using various methods, modifying activities for all experience levels.
  • Model socially acceptable behaviors and use positive reinforcement and behavior management strategies.
  • Communicate regularly with supervisors and team members about camp activities and schedules.
  • Support camp activities as assigned, including specialty camps.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of campers by following standards and evaluating risks.
  • Ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Monitor campers and staff, providing corrective coaching when necessary.
  • Set up and maintain camp facilities and equipment, keeping the environment clean.

Qualifications

  • Passion for working with diverse youth.
  • Enjoy outdoor activities, creativity, and a hard-working attitude.
  • Experience in camping, childcare, education, recreation, sports, or related fields is a plus but not required.
  • Must be 19 years or older by the start of camp.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships and serve as a role model.
  • Willingness to learn and apply new skills.
  • Meet physical qualifications as outlined.

Child Abuse Prevention

  • Report hazards or safety concerns to your supervisor.
  • Follow policies to keep children safe, including supervision.
