The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has commenced an empowerment program for women traders in Nigeria, targeting 400 beneficiaries in its initial six-month pilot phase.

This initiative, in collaboration with ECOBANK PLC, seeks to enhance the business skills and financial inclusion of women entrepreneurs.

Mrs. Massandjé Toure-Litse emphasized, “Empowering women is essential for economic development and growth. It’s a way of building bridges across West Africa.”

She highlighted the program’s expansion plans to other ECOWAS member countries.

Mrs. Nonye Ayeni urged women traders to “dream big” and recognize their pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s prosperity.

She commended the program’s alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.

Divisional Head Mr. Tunde Daudu pledged support, stating, “After six months, we’ll ensure their business grows from mini to small, medium to large.”

ECOBANK will provide loans, training, and mentorship.

Dr. Tony Elumelu noted, “Women in trade can change and transform an economy as this program is critical and in the right direction.”

He emphasized the importance of building capacity for women entrepreneurs.

Director, Trade, ECOWAS Commission, Kola Sofola explained that critical stakeholders were involved in the selection process.
