‘Establish Food Hubs Across Nigeria to Stabilize Supply, Costs’ – Expert Tells FG

by AgroNigeria

Senior Economist at SPM Professionals, Paul Alaje, has urged the federal government to establish dedicated food hubs across Nigeria as a way to stabilize supply and reduce the rising cost of food.

He made this recommendation while highlighting the impact of insecurity on farming activities, particularly in major agricultural states such as Benue and Plateau.

Alaje explained that the consistent increase in food prices is closely tied to limited supply, which has been affected by ongoing violence and threats faced by farmers in key production areas.

He emphasized that without deliberate efforts to protect farmers and improve food production, the economic hardship faced by many Nigerians will persist.

While commending the work of the military in tackling security issues, Alaje pointed out that a shift in strategy is needed.

He proposed that the government identify specific local government areas where special food production zones can be established.

These zones would have basic infrastructure and added security to allow farming to continue without disruption.

According to him, setting up food hubs would not only address food scarcity but also create job opportunities for unemployed and underemployed Nigerians.

“We need to think beyond temporary relief. We need to support farming in a structured and secure environment, to build a more reliable food system,” he said.

Alaje also noted that although official inflation figures may show some improvement, the reality on the ground reflects continued struggles with affordability and access to basic food items.

“I know the Bureau of Statistics is telling us that our food inflation number is improving. I must tell you, as a researcher, there are real concerns, things to be bothered about, regarding insecurity and how that is affecting food.

“We must also know that what we need to do in the short term is to protect our farmers. If not, even though the inflation number has risen 15 or one per cent, the prices of food will remain generally high until supply is guaranteed.”

He further pointed out that for Nigeria to reduce its reliance on imports and strengthen its economy, it must take the required steps to boost agricultural productivity. Food hubs, in his view, offer a focused approach to achieving this goal.

Addressing concerns about malnutrition and climate-related challenges, Alaje said improving domestic food supply should be treated as an urgent priority.

He concluded by saying that ensuring a stable food system is one of the most direct ways to improve the quality of life for Nigerians and support national development.
