‘Applying Compost Manure Sustainable Way to Improve Crop Yield, Soil Health’ – Scientist Tells Farmers

by AgroNigeria

A Soil scientist, Dr. Musa Abdullahi, has called on farmers to adopt the use of compost manure as a sustainable way to improve crop yield, restore soil fertility, and protect the ecosystem.

Speaking in an interview with journalists on Tuesday in Bauchi, Abdullahi also urged agricultural extension workers to step up awareness campaigns that promote the benefits of compost manure among farmers.

He explained that compost manure, produced from the decomposition of animal waste and other organic materials, is a nutrient-rich fertiliser that enhances soil productivity. According to him, it not only reduces dependence on synthetic fertilisers but also minimises waste volume and odour, making it easier to manage and store.

Abdullahi explained that organic matter plays a vital role in reviving degraded soils and strengthening food security. He also noted that compost manure improves water retention, enriches soil with essential nutrients, enhances microbial activity, and promotes better soil structure for sustainable farming.

Abdullahi cautioned that overdependence on chemical fertilisers without incorporating organic inputs leads to gradual soil degradation and declining farm productivity.

He emphasised the crucial role of extension officers as the bridge between scientific research and rural farmers. According to him, extension officers must go beyond fertiliser distribution by actively teaching farmers how to prepare and apply compost. Without such guidance, many smallholders remain unaware of the importance of organic matter in maintaining soil health.

“Extension workers should lead by example. They must demonstrate the use of compost and show farmers how to integrate organic and inorganic methods for sustainable results. Compost is affordable, readily available, and environmentally friendly. With proper support, every farmer can adopt it,” he added.

Abdullahi further called for the establishment of demonstration farms and training programmes where farmers can learn practical composting techniques using household and agricultural waste. He explained that such initiatives would lower production costs while enhancing long-term soil fertility.

He also recommended complementary practices such as crop rotation, cover cropping, and Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM), which combines compost with minimal fertiliser use.

While urging increased investment in extension services and capacity building, Abdullahi stressed that sustainable agriculture begins with healthy soils, which can only be nurtured through composting and other organic-based practices.
