Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has restated his administration’s strong commitment to strengthening food security by diversifying the economy and significantly increasing agricultural investment.
Historically dependent on crude oil, Delta State is now shifting focus toward the untapped potential in large-scale crop cultivation and livestock farming.
As part of this transformation, the governor has commissioned a high-level team to visit one of Brazil’s major ranches. The aim is to explore opportunities for agricultural development and attract foreign investment.
According to a statement released Saturday in Asaba, the Delta delegation has begun a working tour in Brazil. Their agenda includes meetings with ranch officials, inspection of farming facilities, and discussions on areas for potential collaboration with Brazilian agricultural experts.
This initiative is part of the governor’s broader economic diversification strategy, which prioritizes increased food production and sustainable job creation. Focus areas include livestock breeding, dairy production, pasture management, and agro-processing.
Barry Gbe, the governor’s chief economic adviser and leader of the delegation, emphasized the state’s commitment to transforming agriculture by building strategic partnerships and adopting global best practices.
“Brazil is globally recognized for its expertise in livestock and ranching, and we are confident that partnering in this area will yield significant benefits for our people,” said Barry Gbe during the visit.
He stated that the Delta State government is keen on adopting proven Brazilian agricultural models to boost local capacity and attract direct foreign investment aimed at long-term agricultural and economic development.
The Brazilian team, led by Gustavo Monaco, welcomed the initiative, highlighting Nigeria’s large consumer base and Delta State’s fertile land as key advantages for establishing a thriving and sustainable agribusiness sector.
Both sides agreed to continue discussions beyond the current visit, focusing on concrete investment opportunities, agricultural knowledge transfer, and the integration of modern technologies into Delta’s farming systems.
Governor Oborevwori’s goal is to transform Delta State into a leading agribusiness destination in Nigeria and West Africa by fostering investment, supporting local farmers, and leveraging international agricultural expertise.
The delegation is expected to present a detailed report with strategic recommendations for implementing pilot ranching schemes and other high-impact agricultural projects across the state.
Members of the delegation include Val Arenyeka (Commissioner for Agriculture), Charles Aniagwu (Commissioner for Works and Rural Roads), Samuel Oligida (Commissioner for Trade and Investment), Anthony Elekeokwuri (Director General, Investment Development Agency), and George Orogun (Investment Adviser).
