Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has called for stronger support for women and young people in agriculture through deliberate policies and investments that advance agribusiness and expand access to modern farming methods.
Represented by his deputy, Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, the governor made this appeal in Kaduna during activities marking International Women’s Day organised by the Women in Mechanized Agriculture Association.
He stressed that the adoption of modern farm equipment by women would significantly boost output, strengthen food supply systems and create wider economic opportunities across the country. According to him, the event reflected a growing transformation in the agricultural sector, driven largely by the increasing role of women in farming, processing and distribution.
The governor noted that modern farming techniques are reshaping agriculture around the world and urged Nigeria not to lag behind in meeting rising food needs. He explained that mechanisation goes beyond the use of machines, as it improves efficiency, reduces physical strain and opens new income streams for farmers.
He further observed that women in agriculture often juggle farm work with family responsibilities, adding that access to modern tools would ease their burden while increasing productivity and earnings. Despite their vital contributions, many female farmers still face challenges such as limited access to land, credit facilities, technology and mechanised services.
In her remarks, the president of WIMA, Aisha Yakubu Bako, said the association, founded in 2019, focuses on providing mechanisation services while also empowering women to become service providers within the agricultural value chain.
