The Edo State House of Assembly has approved legislation establishing the Edo State College of Agriculture, Science and Technology after repealing the Edo State College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Law enacted in 2019.

The bill received the backing of lawmakers on Tuesday following detailed consideration at the Committee of the Whole House. After the report was adopted, Speaker Blessing Agbebaku instructed the Clerk of the Assembly to forward the clean copy of the legislation to Governor Monday Okpebholo for assent.

The new legislation sets out the legal framework for the institution, including its take off date, the composition of the Governing Council, the responsibilities and membership of the Academic Board, funding arrangements, and other administrative provisions required for the operation of the college.

During deliberations, members also approved an amendment to the bill following a motion moved by Kaycee Osamwonyi Atu and supported by Sunday Ojiezele. The amendment provides for the inclusion of the First Schedule on pages 26 and 27 as part of the law to support its implementation.

Meanwhile, the Assembly received a correspondence from Governor Okpebholo requesting the confirmation of Mr Martins Anayochukwu Oli as a commissioner designate. The letter, dated June 26, 2026, was referred by the Speaker to the House Standing Committee on Government House, Rules and Business for screening, with a directive to submit its report within two weeks.

At the sitting, Agbebaku also sympathised with residents whose homes and property were affected by the recent heavy rainfall across Edo State. He disclosed that at least five houses were destroyed while properties valued at millions of naira were damaged, adding that the state government would provide assistance to those affected.

The Speaker further extended condolences to the families of children who died during the severe rainfall that struck Lagos on Monday.
