The country’s federal and state governments have received calls to devise strategies for lowering and maintaining stable food prices in markets, benefiting from a respite in foreign exchange rates.
Sheikh Musibau-deen Olawale, a spiritual leader and National Ameer of Daaru-r-Rahmat (DARMAT) Islamic Society, offered this counsel in a statement released in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara state, during the Eid-el-fitri celebrations.
“The prevalent economic situation in the country occasioned by the increase in the prices of foods in the country has continued to have a toll on the livelihood of Nigerians.
The development is so devastating that it is very hard for many homes to have three square meals a day, and this has also affected the health growth of the people.
“And with the improvement in Nigeria’s naira against US dollars, I am appealing to the federal and state governments to work together on this and ensure that prices of food items are stabilized and reduced to enable the people to have access to foods with ease”.
The cleric, who also used the occasion to call on Muslims to allow the lessons of Ramadan fasting to reflect on their daily lives, said that Ramadan teachings remained a catalyst for a strong nation.
“Islam advocates accountability, sincerity, and support for one another. It also tasks an individual to show good deeds in order to reduce hunger and poverty in society.
“More than 600 people benefited from a programme, tagged, “feeding a soul” organized by the organization during Ramadan and I am appealing to well-meaning people in the country to always assist the less privileged around them”, he said.
