Senator Shuaib Salisu (Ogun Central) has called on the Federal Government to increase investment in agriculture to enhance food security across Nigeria.
The senator made this appeal at the Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA) 2024 National Reunion Conference in Ile-Ife on Saturday.
Speaking as the guest speaker at the event, Salisu stressed the need for a comprehensive review of economic policies to boost the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through agricultural development.
“If the Federal Government invests heavily in agriculture, there will be food sufficiency in the nation,” he said. “Agriculture, as the economic bedrock of a serious nation, would address the present economic challenges facing the country.”
Salisu highlighted that Nigeria has the resources needed to navigate its current economic issues. He noted that while recent palliative measures provided some relief, they are only temporary solutions.
He emphasized the necessity for long-term strategies, saying, “I have no doubt that as a nation, everything will normalize one day.”
The senator also encouraged the youth to consider farming as a viable alternative to increase food production and support economic growth.
