The Panafrican Farmers Organisation (PAFO) has appointed former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, as its Honorary President, recognizing his unwavering commitment to advancing smallholder and family farmers across Africa.
The appointment was formally made during a ceremony in Abuja, on Monday, attended by PAFO President Ibrahim Coulibaly, Vice President Dr. Yusuf Sinare, and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Babafemi Oyewole.
In his acceptance speech, Obasanjo emphasized the critical role of smallholder farmers in global food security. “Smallholder farmers are the backbone of global food production. The bulk of the food we eat is produced by them. As a farmer myself, I have always supported the cause of other farmers, and I am deeply honored to accept this position. I will use it to help PAFO achieve its vision and mission,” he stated.
Obasanjo’s nomination followed extensive consultations by PAFO’s Board of Directors, who acknowledged his lifelong advocacy for the agricultural sector.
The PAFO president Ibrahim Coulibaly stated that Obasanjo leadership is expected to bolster PAFO’s objectives of improving the livelihoods of African farmers and enhancing food security across the continent.
“His leadership will advance PAFO’s mission of advocating for agricultural development and ensuring food security,” he said.
However, Coulibaly expressed confidence in Obasanjo’s ability to contribute to the organization’s goals, citing his experience, influence, and extensive networks as vital assets.
On his part, the CEO, Dr. Babafemi Oyewole highlighted PAFO’s unique role as the only continental platform representing over 80 million African smallholder and family farmers.
“Through 79 national organizations and five regional networks, PAFO addresses key challenges facing African agriculture, including access to land, financing, trade, public investments, and climate change,” Oyewole remarked.
Founded in 2010 under the sponsorship of the African Union and AUDA-NEPAD, PAFO continues to champion the cause of African farmers, working towards a prosperous and sustainable agricultural sector.
