The Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Dambatta (ABCOAD), has launched a tree planting campaign aimed at fostering environmental sustainability and promoting greener campuses. The initiative, flagged off by the Provost, Professor M. A. Wailare, is part of the institution’s broader Green Campus Project designed to instill environmental consciousness among students and surrounding communities.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Wailare described tree planting as more than just beautification, stressing its role in tackling climate change and safeguarding future generations.
“Tree planting is not just about beautifying our environment. It is a legacy of life, a shield against climate change, and an investment for future generations. As an agricultural institution, ABCOAD has a responsibility to lead by example in promoting sustainable practices,” he said.
According to him, the college plans to plant trees across strategic locations within the campus and in nearby communities, with active participation from students and staff. He also commended the College’s Directorate of Renewable Energy and Climate Change, the Directorate of Linkages and Affiliation, and the Department of Forestry for their roles in making the campaign possible, while appreciating the support of the Kano State Government and the Ministry of Environment.
Deputy Provost, Dr. Hassan Ibrahim, highlighted the importance of the exercise, describing it as a reaffirmation of tree planting’s role in sustaining community livelihoods and protecting the environment.
The Director of Renewable Energy and Climate Change, Mallam Musa Garba, said the campaign was a “resounding success,” noting that the Kano State Government has recently introduced a new environmental policy with strict fines and penalties against indiscriminate tree felling.
The event, held at the college premises, drew participation from top management staff, lecturers, students, community leaders, village heads, and representatives of environmental organizations. It concluded with the symbolic planting of trees by the Provost, staff, students, and community members.
With this campaign, ABCOAD positions itself not only as a hub for agricultural education but also as an advocate for environmental protection and climate resilience in Nigeria.
