ActionAid Raises Concern Over 40.87% Food Inflation, Calls for Urgent Action

by AgroNigeria

ActionAid Nigeria’s Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, has expressed concern over the current rate of food inflation at 40.87% , saying it is “worrisome” and requires immediate attention.

Speaking at the National Stakeholders Consultative Meeting on the 2025 Agriculture Budget in Lagos, Mamedu noted that the recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows food inflation surged to 40.87% in June.

“Urgent action is imperative; it is evident that if food prices were still affordable, citizens would not be mobilising for protests,” Mamedu said.

He emphasized the need for strategic investments in supporting smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth, to address the food price crisis.

Mamedu also highlighted the importance of climate-resilient sustainable agriculture, research and development, and effective coordination to significantly contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth.

The meeting aimed to leverage understanding on national agricultural policies and strengthen citizen participation in making the 2025 agriculture budget responsive to food systems transformation and wealth creation.
