Adamawa Govt to Empower 6,900 Farmers

by AgroNigeria

In a bold step to boost agricultural productivity and tackle food insecurity, the Adamawa State Government is set to empower 6,900 smallholder farmers across the state through a newly launched intervention that combines land allocation, input distribution, and technical support.

The initiative, which will reach 300 farmers in each of the state’s 23 local government areas, includes the development of 300 hectares of farmland per LGA, making it one of the most ambitious agricultural empowerment programmes in the region.

According to the State Commissioner for Agriculture, David F. Jatau, the programme is designed with a strong focus on youth and women inclusion, and will serve as a platform to build resilience among vulnerable farming communities.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Jatau disclosed that the state government has approved ₦3 billion to fund the procurement and distribution of critical agricultural inputs, including fertilizers and improved seeds, to all participating farmers.

“A committee has already been established to screen and finalize the list of beneficiaries,” he explained. “This will be done in partnership with traditional councils, local officials, security agencies, and representatives of women and youth groups to ensure transparency and fairness.”

Beyond input support, the initiative includes technical training, with agricultural extension workers set to provide guidance on modern farming methods, soil health, and sustainable land use practices.

To amplify its reach, the Adamawa government is also collaborating with non-governmental organizations and agricultural development partners, some of whom have committed to cultivating over 2,700 hectares of land in support of the programme.

“This is a strategic intervention,” Jatau noted. “We are not only supplying inputs, we are building a system that empowers farmers with the tools, land, and knowledge needed to succeed.”

The programme is expected to roll out in phases, with the first wave of land preparation and input delivery scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.
