The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) is set to establish a strategic partnership with the Republic of Indonesia to enhance Nigeria’s capacity in biotechnology, with a focus on agriculture, healthcare, and scientific research.
This proposed collaboration was unveiled during a bilateral meeting at the Indonesia Expo Kano 2025, held under the theme “Empowering Trade, Enabling Partnerships.”
Present at the meeting were NBRDA’s Director General, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, and the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Bambang Suharto.
Key discussions centred on the application of artificial insemination to boost livestock productivity, particularly in meat and dairy sectors.
The two parties also explored avenues for joint research and domestic vaccine production to reinforce public health systems.
Beyond livestock and healthcare, the partnership aims to facilitate the transfer of Indonesian biotechnology for producing biofertilisers, bioinsecticides, and biofungicides—environmentally friendly innovations that are expected to increase crop yields and support sustainable agriculture.
Capacity building will be a cornerstone of the alliance, with plans for exchange programmes to develop technical expertise among researchers and farmers from both countries, fostering innovation in the biotechnology space.
To ensure effective coordination, both nations will appoint focal representatives to oversee engagement and implementation. A draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is currently in progress to formalise the agreement.
NBRDA expressed confidence that the partnership will contribute significantly to food security, improved healthcare delivery, and sustainable development for both Nigeria and Indonesia.
