Since its establishment in 2017, the Ogbonge Women Agricultural Multi-purpose Society has disbursed over N400 million in single-digit interest loans to women farmers, aiming to enhance local food production.
The association’s president, Mrs. Chinasa Asonye, made this known in an interview with journalists on Monday in Lagos.
She explained that the society, which started with just 25 women farmers, has grown to include more than 400 members, becoming a strong platform for women in agriculture.
Asonye highlighted the long-standing marginalisation of women in the agricultural sector, emphasizing the society’s commitment to empowering them for greater productivity.
“Women make up over 70 percent of the labour force in food cultivation in Nigeria. We play a crucial role in feeding the nation, yet we remain financially excluded,” she said.
“This was why we established a cooperative based on the village savings and loan model, where members pool savings and access loans with low interest rates to support their farming activities.”
She stressed that the loan scheme has significantly boosted the women’s businesses, enhanced their profits, and strengthened their overall capacity.
“Our members no longer have to chase banks; instead, banks now reach out to us to learn about our work. The support we’ve provided has enabled our women to expand their businesses and raise their voices in the agricultural space,” Asonye noted.
“Today, women are a driving force in agriculture in Lagos State. Our contribution is undeniable, and we ensure our membership process remains transparent and secure by admitting new members only through trusted referrals. This helps protect the integrity of the society,” she added.
