A law enforcement operation led by the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Mohammed Iyimoga, has thwarted an attempt to steal over 32 bags of rice from government-owned farms.
The suspects were intercepted while attempting to transport the stolen rice to Plateau State.
According to Hon. Iyimoga, the culprits had hired unsuspecting farmers under false pretenses, claiming to own the farmland and promising payment for harvesting rice.
“We apprehended some of the criminals in the act, though a few managed to escape,” Iyimoga said on Thursday. “The arrested suspects confessed that they were recruited by a group of Tiv farmers who falsely claimed ownership of the land.”
The commissioner, who personally supervised the operation, confirmed that the detained suspects are cooperating with security agencies to expose the masterminds behind the act. He assured the public that those responsible would be brought to justice.
“I urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities near the farms to security personnel. Together, we can safeguard our resources and deter future theft,” Iyimoga said.
He emphasized the state government’s commitment to protecting public assets and maintaining food security. “The government has made significant investments in agriculture to ensure food security for all. Any act of sabotage will be met with the full weight of the law,” he stated.
However, investigations are ongoing as authorities work to identify and apprehend the masterminds of the operation.
The government reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring that state resources remain secure for the benefit of the people.
