Bayero University Kano (BUK), located in North West Nigeria, has finalized plans to host the 2025 Annual Conference of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria. Themed “Promoting Soil Health and Resilience through Research and Innovation for Sustainable Development,” the event aims to spotlight the importance of soil health by bringing together experts from across Africa.
The National President of the Soil Science Society of Nigeria, Professor Jibrin. Jibrin, who also serves as Director of the Centre for Dryland Agriculture at BUK,emphasized that the conference will promote valuable knowledge exchange to support healthy soils and advance sustainable agricultural practices.
He noted that for years, the focus has largely been on increasing crop yields, often at the expense of soil health. The upcoming conference, he said, seeks to address this imbalance by proposing sustainable solutions for soil management.
Professor Jibrin also revealed that the Society is working in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to carry out research and disseminate information on effective soil use and responsible fertilizer application.
The conference, which begins on April 8th, will recognize several distinguished Nigerians with honorary membership awards for their contributions to soil science. Among the honorees are Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, and the Minister of State for Agriculture.
In addition, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at BUK, Professor Muhammad Hussein, expressed optimism that the gathering will foster the exchange of ideas crucial to enhancing food security in Nigeria.
Other stakeholders also shared their perspectives on the importance of the conference during a media briefing.
