‘Bees Are Key to Ecological Sustainability, Agriculture Productivity’ —ACReSAL

by AgroNigeria

The Project Coordinator for the Federal Capital Territory’s Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), Mrs. Caroline Opara, has said that bees are fundamental to both ecological sustainability and agricultural productivity.

In a recent interview, Opara stressed the crucial role of bees in maintaining biodiversity, noting that they are responsible for up to 75% of pollination in agricultural activities.

“Bees are often referred to as ‘golden insects’ due to their invaluable contribution to the environment,” Opara remarked, highlighting the vital link between pollination and food security. She pointed out that as climate change and environmental degradation threaten agricultural habitats, it becomes more critical to protect bee populations.

Opara further emphasized that the ACReSAL project places a strong focus on apiculture, supporting local beekeeping efforts as part of broader conservation initiatives. “Honey production, along with other non-timber forest products, is integral to the livelihoods of rural communities. By promoting sustainable beekeeping, ACReSAL helps both the environment and local economies,” she said.

The project coordinator called for greater collaboration between government bodies, environmental groups, and farmers to safeguard bee habitats and ensure the sustainability of agricultural ecosystems.

“Protecting bee populations is essential for not only agricultural resilience but also for fostering long-term ecological balance,” Opara concluded.
