Benue: Governor Alia Distributes Improved Palm Seedlings to Journalists

by AgroNigeria

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has officially launched the distribution of improved palm seedlings to journalists in the state under the Benue Alia Palm Project.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at the NUJ House in Makurdi, the Governor encouraged beneficiaries to carefully nurture the seedlings so they can contribute meaningfully to the state’s economic growth.

He emphasized the economic potential of palm production, describing it as a sector capable of transforming the state’s fortunes if properly developed. According to him, palm cultivation can create jobs, support local industries, and improve household incomes.

“Today, I stand before you not just as your Governor, but as a brother and partner to the media, to plant the seeds of a brighter Benue. Each palm tree you grow will one day sustain industries, employ our youth, and add to the prosperity of our state,” he stated.

Governor Alia also called on journalists to remain objective and truthful in their reporting. He appealed for their continued support and cooperation as his administration works to reposition Benue on the path of sustainable growth and development.

“Together, we will rewrite the Benue story. The food basket of the nation will also emerge as the industrial hub of Nigeria,” the Governor declared.

He further announced the donation of a bus to the Union and pledged to offset the State Council’s outstanding ₦12 million dues owed to the national body. In addition, he revealed that the government would soon begin the renovation of the Nigerian Union of Journalists’ House in Makurdi, which has long been in a dilapidated condition.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Benue State Council of the NUJ, Bemdoo Ugber, commended the Governor for his achievements in infrastructure, security, and the promotion of digital governance.

He described the palm initiative as a “wealth-creation project” capable of generating prosperity, strengthening food security, and diversifying the state’s economy.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Agweye Agbenu, stated that the six million hybrid palm trees targeted for planting across the state, if effectively harnessed, could significantly reduce dependence on federal allocations and establish agriculture as a genuine route out of poverty.
