Bill to Set Up Institute of Agriculture Research in Ogun Scales Second Reading

by AgroNigeria

The House of Representatives has advanced a bill seeking the establishment of the National Institute of Agriculture Research and Entrepreneurship in Ogun State, with the proposed legislation passing its second reading.

The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Abiodun Akinlade, representing the Yewa South/Ipokia Federal Constituency, aims to revolutionize the agricultural sector and empower Nigerian youth.

During the debate on the general principles of the bill, Akinlade highlighted the importance of the proposed institute.

He stated that agriculture remains a vital sector of Nigeria’s economy, yet it is limited by inadequate access to research-driven solutions and capacity-building initiatives.

In his presentation, Akinlade noted, “The establishment of the National Institute of Agriculture Research and Entrepreneurship aligns with the Renewed Hope agenda of the government. It will serve as a center of excellence for advanced agricultural research and equip farmers and young entrepreneurs with the skills necessary to enhance productivity and foster economic growth.”

Akinlade emphasized that the institute would promote sustainable farming practices, empowering a new generation of entrepreneurs to drive agricultural development.

He identified Owode Yewa and the entire Yewa land in Ogun State as ideal locations for the institute due to the region’s rich agricultural heritage and proximity to local and international markets.

“This institute is positioned to benefit Ogun State as well as contribute to national food security and economic growth,” Akinlade added.

Akinlade, who doubles as the Chairman, House Committee on Aviation Technology, argued that the creation of the institute would foster equity, justice, and fairness in the allocation of national resources.

He further stated that it would generate employment opportunities, enhance social and economic development, and provide educational advancement for the region.

The bill has now been referred to the House Committee on Agricultural Research and Institutions for further legislative scrutiny and action.
