Bumper Irish Potato Harvest Brings Relief to Plateau Farmers Amid Security Concerns

by AgroNigeria

Farmers in Plateau State, particularly in Mangu and Bokkos Local Government Areas, are rejoicing over an exceptional bumper harvest of Irish potatoes, even as insecurity remains a pressing concern in parts of the state.

For years, recurrent attacks by gunmen have forced many farming communities into hardship and displacement. This season, however, early and consistent rainfall in the state boosted yields, giving farmers one of their most successful harvests in recent memory.

“The rains really favored us this year. Despite the insecurity, we were able to farm and harvest well,” said Iliya, a farmer in Mangu.

In Bokkos, another major potato hub, farmer Rebecca Davou confirmed that the crop productivity was unusually high. “Even the middlemen are surprised,” she noted.

The glut in supply has significantly driven down market prices. A 50kg bag of Irish potatoes, which sold for over N100,000 in January, now goes for between N30,000 and N33,000 at the farm gate. In Jos markets such as Farin Gada, Bukuru, and Taminus, traders sell at N40,000 to N45,000 depending on variety and negotiation.

“There is plenty of supply now. Customers are happy with the lower prices, and we’re still making profit,” said Amina Ibrahim, a trader in Bukuru market.

While the harvest has brought relief to consumers and traders, farmers remain worried about insecurity in the fields and the risk of post-harvest losses. Many warn that poor storage facilities could lead to wastage if urgent interventions are not provided.

Meanwhile, Governor Caleb Mutfwang has pledged to support farmers with improved seedlings and tools while collaborating with the federal government to strengthen security in farming communities.

Despite the challenges, farmers maintained that the bumper harvest has renewed their hope and reinforced their commitment to agriculture, even as they continue to pray for lasting peace in Plateau State.
