Join our outstanding lab team at UPMC Hamot as a full-time Laboratory Support Technician on second shift (1:45 PM – 10:15 PM). This role follows a steady four-week rotating schedule, including a variety of days (Sunday through Saturday), two weekends every four weeks, and rotating holidays. You'll work alongside dedicated, hardworking professionals to support timely, high-quality patient care. In this role, there is opportunity to -

    \n
  • Receive and prepare specimens for analysis by sorting, labeling, and delivering them to appropriate laboratory sections.
  • \n
  • Answer phone inquiries, investigate specimen status, and direct callers to appropriate resources as needed.
  • \n
  • Perform routine maintenance and temperature checks on laboratory instruments following established protocols.
  • \n
  • Restock laboratory supplies and maintain clean, organized storage areas for all supply types (room temperature, refrigerated, frozen).
  • \n
  • Prepare and replenish reagents, consumables, and media required for instruments and microbiologic procedures.
  • \n
  • Execute assigned QA/QC procedures and resolve pending or unprocessed work items from laboratory worklists.
  • \n
  • Decontaminate work surfaces and clean glassware to ensure a safe, compliant laboratory environment.
  • \n
  • Transport specimens and deliver laboratory supplies

Required

\n
    \n
  • High School diploma or equivalent, and at least 2yrs experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) required in a clinical lab, OR
  • \n
  • Associate degree (with biology and chemistry courses) and at least 1yr of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • \n
  • Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification and 1yr of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical lab, OR
  • \n
  • Successful completion of a 50wk U.S. military medical laboratory training course, OR
  • \n
  • B.S. degree from an accredited institution with a major in a biological or clinical laboratory science OR
  • \n
  • Currently enrolled in an MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or equivalent training program, with 3 yrs college credits
  • \n

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Medical Laboratory Assistant MLA (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred.
  • \n
  • Valid driver's license if one is departmentally required.
  • \n
