Community leaders in Umuahia North Local Council have raised concerns over the growing environmental impact of cattle rearing, citing indiscriminate dung disposal, destruction of farmlands, and road obstructions as urgent challenges.
The matter came to the fore during a meeting with the Abia State Environmental Sanitation Agency (ASEPA), where President Generals (PGs) of the affected communities pressed for stronger measures to safeguard their environment.
Responding, ASEPA’s Zonal Deputy General Manager, Ambrose Jonah, assured that the agency would work with community leaders to identify cattle owners and design policies to address the problem.
He noted that sanitation, waste disposal, and flood control would form the core of the new measures.
The meeting further resolved to deepen collaboration between ASEPA and the communities through regular engagements, with monitoring frameworks put in place to track progress and ensure compliance with environmental standards.
