Dangote Group has reaffirmed its commitment to ending Nigeria’s importation of raw sugar by intensifying efforts under its Sugar Backward Integration program.
Speaking at the Dangote Special Day during the 14th Gateway International Trade Fair in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Wednesday, the company’s president, Aliko Dangote, revealed that over $700 million has been invested in land acquisition, machinery, infrastructure, manpower, and other strategic initiatives to enhance local sugar production.
Dangote, represented by Tunde Mabogunje, Regional Director (Lagos/Ogun) of Dangote Cement, emphasized the company’s role in driving self-sufficiency in the sugar sector.
He stated: “The company is committed to ensuring that Nigeria ends the importation of raw sugar by actively intensifying its execution of the Sugar Backward Integration. In this regard, we have committed over $700 million to various impactful activities, including community relations and corporate social responsibility.”
He further disclosed that the group is expanding investments in the agricultural sector to support food security, adding that new agricultural products will soon enter the market.
On the trade fair, Dangote expressed optimism that the event would help expand awareness of the company’s innovative products, generate sales, attract buyers, and open new markets, ultimately fostering job creation and economic growth.
He reiterated the company’s commitment to its partnership with OGUNCCIMA, emphasizing its broader benefits for Nigeria and Africa’s economy.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Oludaisi Elemide, commended Dangote Group for its various interventions and urged the company to enhance its environmental sustainability efforts.
