Delta Govt Expresses Concern Over Food Insecurity

by AgroNigeria

At the 2024 World Food Day Celebration in Asaba, Delta State, Acting Governor Monday Onyeme highlighted the pressing issues affecting food security in the region.

He emphasized that climate change, inadequate technology adoption, unwarranted attacks on farmlands, and lack of farmers’ education are major obstacles to overcome.

To address these challenges, Onyeme stressed the importance of government intervention, stating, “We are committed to encouraging smart agriculture and implementing the Delta State Government Livestock Management Law and a steady supply of agricultural inputs to farmers.”

These inputs include seedlings, seeds, agrochemicals, feeds, and fertilizers.

The state government has established a committee on food security and has provided agro inputs to over 6,000 farmers, with an additional 2,000 to be supported through the African Union Development Agency National Office in Nigeria.

Onyeme reiterated the significance of the United Nations’ World Food Day, celebrated on October 16, and its theme, “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future.”

He emphasized that having nutritious food is a right, not a privilege, as stated in the United Nations Universal Declarations of Human Rights.

With these efforts, Delta State is taking proactive steps to ensure food security and address malnutrition, aligning with the goal of achieving zero hunger by 2030.
