Delta Govt Introduces Farming Initiative in Primary Schools

by AgroNigeria

The Delta State Government announced on Tuesday that it has launched a school farming initiative in primary schools across the state.

The goal is to engage young people in agriculture, enhance nutrition, and promote food security.

Implemented through the Ministry of Basic Education, the programme has already begun, with seedlings and farming tools distributed to participating schools in Asaba, Ozoro, and Patani.

Organised by the State Committee on Food and Nutrition (SCFN), the initiative is themed: “School Farming as a Tool for Sustainable Nutrition for Learners.”

Speaking at the launch, Director at the Ministry of Basic Education, Mr. Daniel Akiri—represented by Dr. Michael Emeshili, highlighted the relevance of the theme.

He noted that nutrition is a key indicator of development and that incorporating agriculture into the school curriculum would help achieve food security and promote self-sufficiency among children.

Akiri praised the SCFN for spearheading the initiative and urged teachers and students to participate actively.

He emphasized that children often absorb what they are taught through practice, and engaging in farming at an early age encourages a lifelong habit of cultivation.

“This effort to reintroduce farming into schools will help address the challenges of food and nutrition insecurity while supporting better nutritional outcomes,” he said.

During the hands-on training, agricultural experts Mr. Emeke Ochelli and Dr. Arthur Bidor demonstrated proper planting techniques to ensure high yields. They stressed that school farming is not only about food production but also about instilling values such as responsibility, sustainability, and independence.

“By learning to grow their own food, pupils acquire essential life skills that support both personal growth and national development,” they added.

Chief Inspector of Education, Mrs. Rachael Ojie, also commended the organisers and encouraged both public and private schools to incorporate farming into their activities.

According to her, school farming equips pupils with the practical knowledge needed for food production and better nutrition.

“It ensures that children have access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food that supports their health and development,” she said.

Tomato, pepper, and oil palm seedlings were distributed to pupils from the participating schools in Asaba, Ozoro, and Patani as part of the programme rollout.
