Ekiti Govt to Establish Commercial Goat Farming Hub

by AgroNigeria

The Ekiti State Government has announced plans to establish a commercial goat farming hub in Otun Ekiti, Moba Local Government Area, under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project.

The initiative is aimed at accelerating livestock production, modernising the goat and sheep value chain, and improving the livelihoods of rural farmers.

State Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Mr. Olayinka Adedipe, said Otun Ekiti was strategically chosen because of its strong sheep and goat market, which attracts buyers from within and outside the state.

He explained that the hub would expand existing trade in a hygienic and organised environment, thereby increasing revenue for both farmers and government.

According to him, the facility will serve as a model centre for modern goat farming, providing farmers with access to improved breeds, veterinary services, and best husbandry practices. It will also function as a training and production hub designed to boost capacity across the value chain.

Reinforcing this, the L-PRES Value Chain Officer, Mrs. Adenike Omoleye, noted that the project would not only enhance productivity but also open structured market opportunities for farmers.

She said the hub would provide input supply, veterinary care, aggregation, processing, and distribution services, while linking farmers to both domestic and international markets.

Traditional leaders in the host community have pledged their support for the project. The Oore of Otun Ekiti, Oba Adekunle Adeagbo, thanked the government for siting the hub in his town and assured that the traditional institution would ensure its sustainability.

He emphasised that the hub would unlock new economic opportunities for farmers and create jobs for youth in the area.

The goat hub is part of the broader L-PRES programme, jointly supported by the World Bank, federal and state governments, to strengthen Nigeria’s livestock sector.
