Dr. Priscilla M. Achakpa, a climate change expert and facilitator, IFAD Consultant has emphasized the need for collective action in addressing impacts of climate change on agricultural development in Nigeria.

Speaking during the Wrap-up Ceremony of the IFAD Social, Environment and Climate Assessment Procedures (SECAP) National Workshop held at Villa Toscana, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Dr. Achakpa pointed out that recent climatic challenges, including floods, have justified the need for reverse climate adaptation measures.

She said, ” The need to address climate change impacts must remain central to agricultural development initiatives.”

On impacts of the two-week capacity building workshop, Dr. Achakpa said key lessons learnt included the importance of stakeholders’ engagement, tailored approaches to ensure practical and inclusive interventions, and the role of capacity building and regular training in fostering long-term compliance.

According to her, “Effective project outcomes depend on inclusive and active participation of all stakeholders, including farmer organizations and decision-makers at various levels.”

“The workshop also underscored the importance of integrating social, environmental, and climate standards into agricultural projects to promote resilience and sustainability.

“We need to sustain learning, share best practices, and support ongoing implementation of social and environmental standards.”

Dr. Achakpa expressed gratitude to the Federal Government of Nigeria, Federal Ministries of Agriculture and Food Security, and Finance as well as other stakeholders for their active participation and support.

The national workshop brought together 60 participants, including experts, policymakers, and IFAD-funded projects staff, among other stakeholders.
