FCTA Approves Procurement of Agricultural Inputs to Boost Dry Season Farming

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Executive Council has approved a landmark initiative to bolster dry season farming through the procurement of critical agricultural inputs for irrigation farmers.

Mandate Secretary of the Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Mr. Lawan Geidam, announced the council’s decision after its 10th meeting in Abuja.

Geidam outlined the approved inputs, which include 250 metric tonnes of NPK fertiliser, 300 metric tonnes of urea, 310 knapsack sprayers, and 3,500 litres of liquid fertiliser.

“This is the first time the FCT administration is making a significant investment in dry season farming by providing essential inputs to support irrigation farmers,” Geidam revealed.

The initiative aims to empower farmers to extend agricultural production beyond the rainy season, ensuring year-round farming activities.

“The rainy season has ended, and we are committed to encouraging dry season farming in the FCT. This approach will enable farmers to sustain production throughout the year, significantly boosting food availability,” he said.

Geidam praised the FCT minister for approving the contract, highlighting its potential to transform irrigation farming across the region.

“With this support, we expect irrigation farming to thrive in the FCT, contributing meaningfully to meeting the growing food demands of our population,” he added.

However, the move is part of the FCT’s broader strategy to diversify agricultural practices and enhance food security in the territory.
