The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has unveiled a renewed fertiliser support scheme designed to ease production costs for farmers, stabilise food prices, and boost food security across the territory.
Flagging off the distribution of 550 metric tonnes of assorted fertilisers in Abuja, on Thursday, the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, represented by his Chief of Staff, Chidi Amadi, said the intervention was a deliberate strategy to empower farmers during the planting season.
He emphasised that the fertilisers, subsidised at 50 per cent, would be distributed strictly to genuine farmers across the six area councils.
According to him, the scheme reflects the administration’s alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, while also addressing the pressing challenge of rising food prices.
“This initiative underscores our firm commitment to food security, agricultural revitalisation, and the welfare of our people. It is a timely exercise designed to ensure that farmers can access inputs when they are most needed,” he said.
Wike further noted that the programme was complemented by partnerships with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the Leventis Foundation, and the World Bank.
These collaborations, he said, focus on reclaiming degraded lands, building capacity, and promoting good agronomic practices.
Mandate Secretary of the Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Ango Abdullahi, added that in addition to fertilisers, farmers would also receive 3,500 knapsack sprayers.
He stressed that the Secretariat was working to reposition the agricultural sector in line with the President’s agenda, noting that Abuja’s growing population makes strengthening food production an urgent priority.
The latest distribution comes after the FCTA shared 900 metric tonnes of fertilisers donated by the Central Bank of Nigeria in August, further cementing the administration’s commitment to sustaining annual support schemes for farmers in the capital.
