by AgroNigeria

The livestock sector in Gombe State is set for a major transformation, as the Federal Government has approved the establishment of a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project.

The facility, which will serve as a centre for diagnosis, treatment, research, and training, is expected to significantly improve livestock health, productivity, and disease surveillance across Gombe and the wider northern region.

The development was confirmed by the National Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Malam Sanusi Abubakar, during a two-day technical mission to the state. Leading a high-level federal delegation, Abubakar visited the proposed site for a preliminary assessment of ongoing livestock interventions and infrastructure rollout.

According to him, the hospital is part of the next phase of the L-PRES project aimed at strengthening veterinary services and enhancing product certification for both domestic and export markets. He disclosed that Gombe would be the first state in Nigeria to benefit from this kind of facility, noting that the project is being piloted in the state as a model for national livestock health development.

“This is a pilot project. It has never been done anywhere in the country. Gombe is the first, and we hope the state will serve as a model for other states,” Abubakar said, while pledging sustained support from the national office.

The veterinary hospital is to be located within the newly established 184-hectare Agro-Livestock Development Zone in Gombe State. The zone, initiated by the administration of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, already hosts an ultramodern abattoir, an international livestock market, a tannery, and a leather processing factory all strategically designed to position Gombe as a hub for livestock innovation and agribusiness.

During the visit, the Gombe State L-PRES Coordinator, Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, expressed gratitude to the national office for selecting Gombe to pioneer the project. He described the initiative as a landmark achievement for the state and reaffirmed the government’s readiness to ensure its successful execution.

Also speaking, Ms. Asabe, Project Manager of Lubell Nigeria Ltd, the firm handling the construction assured stakeholders of quality delivery and timely completion in line with contract specifications.

The visiting delegation included representatives from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, L-PRES National Coordination Office, and other technical experts, who collectively affirmed the strategic value of the project in transforming Nigeria’s livestock sector.
