The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced the rehabilitation of animal watering ponds across Sokoto, Borno and Taraba States under the Programme for Integrated Development and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Niger Basin (PIDACC), as part of efforts to strengthen climate resilience, improve rural livelihoods and reduce resource-based conflicts.
The intervention, being implemented through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, targets strategic livestock watering points that have deteriorated due to climate change impacts, prolonged dry seasons and poor infrastructure maintenance. The programme is supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB), with technical and sectoral input from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.
