As Nigeria marks its 65th year of independence, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has restated the government’s focus on agriculture as a pillar of national development.
In a message released in Abuja to commemorate the anniversary, Kyari emphasized the federal government’s ongoing efforts to reduce reliance on imported food by supporting local production.
He noted that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is taking practical steps to strengthen the agriculture sector, especially through targeted support for smallholder farmers.
According to the Minister, initiatives such as the Renewed Hope Agenda are making a measurable difference.
These programs aim to provide farmers with better access to seeds, fertilizers, and modern techniques that improve crop yields. Kyari said that the ultimate goal is to ensure that more food is produced locally and that families across Nigeria can depend on food grown within the country.
Kyari further noted that economic and agricultural self-reliance are vital aspects of national freedom.
He added that the progress made in farming reflects Nigeria’s capacity to stand on its own and meet the needs of its citizens through domestic resources.
He congratulated President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and the Nigerian people on the anniversary, acknowledging the efforts of past generations who made self-rule possible. Kyari also urged continued support for government policies designed to make food more accessible and affordable for everyone.
In his closing remarks, the Minister expressed optimism about the direction of the country’s agriculture and called for collective commitment to ensuring long-term food security.
