The Federal Government has announced plans to develop 500 hectares of land in Benue State as part of efforts to modernize livestock farming and boost dairy production.
Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, made this known during his visit to the Benue Livestock Investigation and Breeding Centre in Raav, Gwer East Local Government Area, where he assessed the state of the facility.
Although the centre spans 2,400 hectares, the minister revealed that the first phase will focus on clearing 500 hectares to establish pasture ahead of the rainy season.
Expressing concern over the facility’s current state, he noted that despite its vast expanse, it houses only 37 animals and requires urgent rehabilitation.
To reposition the centre, the Federal Government will set up a committee to design a comprehensive development plan. This will include the introduction of large-scale ranching and dairy enterprises, along with essential infrastructure such as animal housing, isolation units, maternity sections, and staff quarters.
As part of efforts to enhance livestock research and productivity, the centre will collaborate with Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, to drive innovation in breeding and animal health management.
Director-General of the Benue Bureau for Livestock Development, Dr. Aondoakaa Asambe, welcomed the initiative, stressing that structured ranching would not only improve security but also enable displaced farmers to return to their lands.
He highlighted the economic potential of the project and commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for prioritizing livestock development in the state.
During his tour, the minister also visited the Benue Swine and Crop Improvement Project in Yandev, Gboko LGA, and the International Cattle Market in Makurdi, underscoring the Federal Government’s broader strategy to transform Nigeria’s livestock sector.
