FG to Introduce Advanced Technology For All-year-round Farming

by AgroNigeria

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has announced that the Federal Government plans to introduce advanced technology to enable all-year-round farming in the country.

The Minister made this known while addressing journalists at the State House on Tuesday.

Kyari stressed the need for enhanced efficiency in agricultural practices, highlighting the importance of speeding up land clearance, harvesting, and chemical deployment, including the use of pesticides and herbicides.

He explained that the introduction of drone technology would significantly boost productivity, noting that a single drone could accomplish the work of hundreds of individuals in just one day.

“We are going to use drones to fast-track agricultural activities, harvest quickly, and then make the land available for the next cycle of cultivation,” Kyari said.

In addition to the technological advancements, the Minister revealed plans to collaborate with the private sector to empower young people and encourage them to take full advantage of the government’s mechanization program. This, he said, would help create a vibrant agricultural workforce that would drive the sector forward.

Kyari also underscored the importance of shifting perceptions about agriculture. He urged farmers to view agriculture not only as a means to feed themselves but also as a business venture capable of generating sustainable income.

The Minister pointed out that while providing agricultural inputs may have been the traditional approach to supporting smallholder farmers, it may no longer be sufficient to incentivize increased production.

“It is essential to change the mindset of our farmers and help them understand that agriculture is not just about subsistence but is also a profitable business. We need to engage farmers in a way that encourages private sector funding to support their agricultural activities,” he added.
