The Managing Director of SMAT Farms Ltd., Mr. Suraj Ajiboye, has called on the Federal Government to unlock the potential of sustainable livestock production, prioritize livestock farming as a means of creating jobs for Nigeria’s youth and improving food security.
He made this appeal on Monday during a two-week program on developing occupational standards for technical education and training in animal husbandry at the University of Ibadan.
Ajiboye highlighted the importance of artificial insemination (AI) in animal husbandry, emphasizing its potential to enhance the breeds of beef and indigenous animals, including cattle and goats.
He noted that AI could transform the livestock industry, which he described as a sector with the capacity to generate significant employment and wealth.
“Artificial insemination not only improves the breed of animals but also reduces the physical movement of livestock, which can help address farmers-herders conflicts,” he said.
He expressed hope that President Bola Tinubu would prioritize resetting the livestock sector for sustainable growth.
Ajiboye also advocated for adopting ranching systems to modernize livestock farming. He explained that ranching helps control disease transmission, secures livestock, and fosters a structured environment for animal management. “When it comes to animal husbandry, ranching is the way to go,” he stated.
Adding to the discussion, the First Vice President of the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science, Prof. Akinyele Oluwatomisin Adeseyinwa, described AI as a tool to boost productivity and reduce farmer-herder clashes.
He emphasized the need for comprehensive training to ensure widespread adoption of the technology, which could enhance livestock productivity and provide more opportunities for aspiring farmers.
Adeseyinwa further highlighted that AI, when fully embraced, could generate jobs while significantly improving the efficiency and sustainability of livestock farming in Nigeria.
