FMLD Announces Plans to Establish Dairy Training Institute In Nigeria

by AgroNigeria

As part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s dairy value chain and enhance technical expertise in the sector, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) has announced plans to establish a Dairy Training Institute.

Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, emphasizing the urgent need to bridge knowledge gaps in dairy farming.

“The institute will equip both aspiring and practicing dairy farmers with critical skills in pasture cultivation, feed and fodder management, dairy animal husbandry, health management, animal breeding, milk collection, preservation, and transportation. A thriving dairy sector depends on empowering those at its core,” he stated.

Maiha commended NESTLÉ Nigeria for its commitment to developing the local dairy industry, particularly its initiatives to promote indigenous cattle breeds.

He also underscored the need to tackle milk adulteration and revamp grazing reserves to regulate cattle movement in urban areas.

“If we are serious about commercial dairy farming, we must establish the right structures—proper grazing reserves, organized milk collection systems, and stronger regulations against milk adulteration,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of NESTLÉ Nigeria, Victoria Ndee Uwadoka, Corporate Communications, Public Affairs, and Sustainability Lead, revealed that the company aggregated over 1.65 million liters of milk between 2021 and 2024.

She highlighted the company’s modern dairy demonstration farm in Paikon Kore grazing reserve, Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT, which was commissioned by the Minister on February 6, 2025.
