FMLD, REA Sign MoU On Renewable Energy Deployment In Pastoral Communities

The Federal Government has entered into a strategic partnership to modernize Nigeria’s livestock sector through renewable energy deployment, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Livestock Development and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Livestock Development, Hon. Idi Mukhtar Maiha, described the agreement as a milestone in advancing sustainable livestock production and improving the livelihoods of pastoral communities.

He noted that the initiative would provide solar-powered grids to rehabilitated and resettled grazing reserves across the country, unlocking the potential of Nigeria’s 417 reserves that have long suffered from poor infrastructure.

According to him, the renewable energy intervention will power irrigation systems for year-round fodder production, enhance water availability for livestock, and improve the overall quality of herds. He added that the solar grids will also bring electricity to pastoral settlements, boosting security, expanding access to education and healthcare, and creating new economic opportunities.

“The provision of clean, renewable energy will have a transformative impact. It will not only strengthen food security but also stimulate local economies by generating jobs in the installation and maintenance of solar systems,” Maiha said.

He further disclosed that the livestock model villages to be developed under the plan will feature veterinary clinics, primary healthcare centres, schools, solar-powered boreholes, earth dams for pasture cultivation, and internal road networks.

The Minister emphasized that the collaboration reflects the Federal Government’s commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda to resolve long-standing challenges in the livestock sector through innovative and integrated solutions.

He stressed that the project will also help reduce conflicts between herders and farmers by promoting resource availability and peaceful coexistence.

“With this partnership, we are laying the foundation for a more secure, productive, and prosperous future for our livestock sector and for millions of Nigerians who depend on it,” he affirmed.
