A high-level German delegation, led by Consul General Weert Börner, has expressed strong interest in strengthening economic ties with Enugu State, focusing on agriculture, energy, trade, and investment.

The delegation met with Governor Peter Mbah at the Government House to explore potential collaborations.

The visit follows initial discussions in Lagos in 2023, aimed at enhancing German engagement with Enugu State. Governor Mbah welcomed the German delegation, affirming Enugu’s selection as a key business and investment hub in southern Nigeria due to its improved ease-of-doing-business environment under his administration. He expressed the state’s readiness to collaborate and achieve its goal of growing the economy to $30 billion within seven years through private sector investments and international cooperation.

The governor highlighted abundant opportunities in agriculture, energy, trade, and investment, including Special Agro Processing Zones.

Mbah shared that Enugu State has secured 300,000 hectares of land to attract commercial farmers and is actively seeking partnerships to advance its livestock industry. In addition, the state has launched an aggressive road infrastructure development initiative to enhance access to farmlands and facilitate the transport of farm produce and processed products.

Mbah encouraged the German delegation to take advantage of Enugu State’s progressive policies and improved regulations in the electricity sector through partnerships and investments.

The Ogun State Government has put 30,000 farmers into clusters to enhance production of rice, maize, and cassava, among others, with provision of land and subsidized items.

Owotomo expressed satisfaction with the progress of farmers in the cluster, noting, “Most of the people in this cluster were not farming before now, but they were planting on a plot which has been expanded through the state government’s support.”

Permanent Secretary Kehinde Jokotoye urged farmers to take advantage of government interventions to increase their yield and livelihood.

Project Coordinator Mosunmola Owo-Odunsi said the rice cultivation program aimed to improve farmers’ living standards.

Cluster Secretary Salam Adelowo lauded the government’s partnership drive and passion to make rice available in large quantities, soliciting improved social amenities on the farm.
