GM Crops Can Help Fight Food Insecurity – Biotech Society

by AgroNigeria

The Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN) has emphasized that the promotion of Genetic Modification (GM) technology and genetically modified crops could play a pivotal role in combating food insecurity in the country.

Prof. Sylvia Uzochukwu, President of BSN, highlighted that GM crops have the potential to significantly improve food security by offering higher micronutrient content, which could address nutritional deficiencies, particularly among the impoverished population. This, she said, is one of the many advantages of GM crops, which have gained global recognition in recent years.

Uzochukwu pointed out that the global area cultivated with genetically modified crops expanded from just 1.7 million hectares in 1996 to an impressive 134 million hectares by 2009. Currently, around 14 million farmers across 25 countries, including 16 developing nations, are involved in the cultivation of GM crops. These crops, she noted, contribute to increased yields by mitigating the impact of biotic (pests and diseases) and abiotic (drought, soil infertility) stresses.

One notable example she provided was the introduction of Biotech (Bt) cowpea, a genetically modified crop that could see yield increases as high as 90 percent. Uzochukwu emphasized that in light of rising global demand for agricultural products, dwindling natural resources, and the additional challenges posed by climate change, increasing agricultural productivity is essential for ensuring long-term food security.

She further argued that GM crops could improve the economic well-being of rural areas by increasing income and reducing poverty in Nigeria. Additionally, the adoption of GM crops could reduce the reliance on chemical pesticides, which in turn would mitigate the environmental and health hazards commonly associated with conventional farming practices.

Drawing on the success of Bt cotton in India, Uzochukwu illustrated how the crop has not only helped to reduce insecticide use and boost yields but has also generated significant employment opportunities and income gains for rural communities. Moreover, she noted that the environmental benefits of Bt cotton extend to improved health, better water quality, and the preservation of biodiversity.

The BSN president emphasized the potential of GM crops to revolutionize agriculture in Nigeria, contributing to both food security and economic development while minimizing negative environmental and health impacts.
