In the face of widespread outrage over hunger in Nigeria, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University (COOU) in Anambra State has launched a comprehensive agricultural initiative within its campus, led by Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Kate Omenugha to improve food production.
The initiative has seen significant success, with substantial returns from vegetable sales to staff, students, and the local community.
Building on the university’s existing Faculty of Agriculture and large landmass, Prof. Omenugha has revived fish farming and expanded agricultural activities to include cassava and various vegetables.
This model demonstrates the potential for Nigerian universities to drive change in food production and become centers of action against hunger.
By leveraging their agricultural expertise and resources, universities can make a tangible impact on the country’s food security challenges. COOU’s example should be emulated by other higher institutions to create a sustainable solution to Nigeria’s food shortages.
