As part of efforts to increase rice production and enhance food security, the Ogun State Government, in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), has distributed agro inputs to 100 rice farmers across the state.
The distribution ceremony, which took place in Abeokuta, marked the commencement of the dry season farming season.
The initiative, supported by the FGN/OGSG/IFAD-Assisted Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP-AF) in partnership with FAB AYOKA Agro Service Ltd., aims to empower local farmers and contribute to the state’s agricultural growth.
Speaking at the event, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Bolu Owotomo, stated the purpose of the support.
He explained that the distribution of agro inputs would help increase rice production, a staple food in Nigeria, as well as encourage local production, especially during the dry season.
“The support will increase production of rice, being the staple food in the country, and it will also encourage local production of rice, especially during the dry season,” Owotomo stated.
Owotomo, who was represented by Mr. Kehinde Jokotoye, Permanent Secretary, and Mrs. Omolola Ojelade, Director of Fishery Services, highlighted the importance of the initiative.
According to him, the increased rice production would lead to higher internally-generated revenue and improved income for local farmers.
Furthermore, the Commissioner emphasized the potential to utilize the state’s abundant land resources for rice cultivation.
“The initiative shows our commitment to empowering our local communities which are engaging in agriculture, as well as ensuring sustainable growth and achieving food security.”
Owotomo expressed gratitude to Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun for his support to the IFAD/VCDP program, noting that the Governor’s contribution of a N71.5 million counterpart fund has been instrumental in empowering farmers and enabling them to achieve successful harvests.
The Commissioner commended the collaboration with FGN-IFAD/VCDP, acknowledging its positive impact on the state’s agricultural sector.
