Jigawa Approves N1.6bn for Agricultural Support Programme to Scale Up Food Production

by AgroNigeria

The Jigawa State Executive Council has approved N1.6 billion for the implementation of the 2026 Dry Season Workers’ Agricultural Support Programme, in a decisive move to scale up food production and reinforce economic resilience across the state.

Briefing journalists after the meeting on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sport and Culture, Mr. Sagir Musa, said the programme is structured to provide workers with critical farming support during the dry season. This includes the provision of agricultural inputs, irrigation facilities, mechanisation services and extension support to ensure improved productivity.

He explained that the intervention is designed to expand crop output, stabilise food supply and reduce post-harvest losses, particularly at a time when efficient dry season farming is increasingly vital to sustaining year-round food availability.

Musa reiterated that the state government remains committed to policies that promote food sufficiency, economic growth and inclusive development.

In a separate but related decision, the council also approved the purchase of 86 housing units from the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development at a cost of N853,138,929.56.

According to the commissioner, the acquisition is aimed at addressing accommodation needs within the state, especially for public servants and other qualified beneficiaries.

He noted that the move aligns with Governor Umar Namadi’s 12-Point Agenda, which places housing and urban development among its priority pillars.

Musa added that the housing initiative is intended to reduce the deficit in decent shelter, expand access to affordable homes and improve overall living standards across the state.
