Jigawa State governor, Umar Namadi has made a pledge to reduce the state’s poverty rate by 10% each year, as part of his administration’s commitment to improving the economic conditions for its citizens.
While Nigeria holds a strong position in Africa’s agricultural sector, with vast productions of crops like cassava, yam, rice, oil palm, and sorghum, the northern part of the country, including Jigawa, continues to face troubling levels of poverty. Experts point to the region’s reliance on outdated farming techniques as a major barrier to productivity and efficiency.
To address these challenges the Jigawa State government has launched a comprehensive program aimed at lifting over 38,000 people across the state’s 27 local government areas.
This initiative seeks to modernize agriculture and bolster local businesses, seen as pivotal for creating jobs and driving economic growth within the region.
Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Haruna Aliyu Dan Gyatum, has revealed that the state government will allocate 75 million naira to provide support for local businesses, with the aim of fostering entrepreneurship and stimulating economic activity.
These investments are expected to boost the state’s economic output and reduce the widespread poverty that has long plagued the region.
Governor Namadi emphasized that this initiative is a vital component of his comprehensive 12-point plan, which prioritizes improving the lives of Jigawa residents.
