Kwara Seeks Partnership With Private Sector to Transform Sorghum Value Chain

by AgroNigeria

The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with the private sector to empower farmers and enhance agricultural productivity, particularly in the  Sorghum Value Chain.

This commitment was announced during the launch of the Sorghum Value Chain Transformation Project by leading agricultural firm, Arzikin Noma, in Ikeja, Lagos.

The project, a significant initiative aimed at cultivating 10,000 farmers across Oyo, Ogun, and Kwara States, seeks to promote sorghum as a viable alternative to expensive wheat and barley.

These traditional grains are widely used in the production of beer, beverages, and livestock feed.

The Kwara State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Oloruntoyosi Thomas, emphasized the role of collaboration with private sector entities.

“Providing essential support, including access to inputs, training programs, and demonstration plots, is crucial for the success of our agricultural sector,” she stated.

Thomas highlighted the steps taken by the Kwara State Government to create a conducive environment for agricultural growth.

“We have implemented strategic measures, such as establishing over 100 farmers’ clusters ranging from 20 to 5,000 hectares. This clustering approach facilitates targeted support from partners and has already attracted significant private sector investments, including the establishment of a soybean processing plant,” she explained.

The Commissioner further attributed the growing interest from investors to Kwara’s business-friendly policies and streamlined administrative processes.

“We have prioritized the training and mobility of our extension agents, recognizing their pivotal role in empowering farmers and achieving agricultural success,” she added.
