The Lagos State Government has reached out to 250 women across four local government areas with a blend of food support and nutrition education, in a drive to foster healthier lifestyles at the grassroots.
The initiative, carried out through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation under the “Ounje Lo Re Awo” programme, aims not just to alleviate hunger but to improve overall wellness among women in underserved communities.
Speaking during the event held at the Isheri Skills Acquisition Centre, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Dada, said the programme was designed to go beyond mere distribution of food.
“This initiative is not just about food; it is about restoring dignity, promoting wellness, and empowering our women with the tools to live healthier, more informed lives,” she said.
She highlighted that the outreach aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s broader vision of prioritising the welfare, healthcare, and empowerment of women in Lagos.
“We thought it would be nice for us to also help women feed appropriately. It’s one thing to have a source of livelihood, it’s another thing to eat right,” she added.
In addition to receiving food items such as rice, beans, curry, eggs, fresh vegetables, and whole chickens, beneficiaries from Kosofe, Agboyi-Ketu, Ikeja, and Ifako-Ijaiye also participated in nutrition education sessions.
“Every beneficiary got a full chicken—not half, not quarter—because we want them to feel valued and nourished,” Dada emphasized.
Nutritionist Sola Malomo, who spoke at the event, encouraged the women to embrace healthier food choices, urging them to include more vegetables, water, and traditional staples like okra in their meals.
Dada expressed appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his sustained support for women-centric programmes, and thanked healthcare professionals and community leaders for their involvement in the initiative.
