Livestock Ministry Will Boost Nigeria’s Economy, Tackle Insecurity

The Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather Science and Technology (NILEST), Prof. Mohammed Yakubu, has lauded the establishment of the Ministry for Livestock Development, describing it as a strategic move to enhance the Nigerian economy and tackle insecurity.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Abuja, Yakubu said the creation of the ministry, announced by President Bola Tinubu, was a significant decision aimed at unlocking the potential of Nigeria’s livestock sector.

“The creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development is a welcome development, and we have to thank President Bola Tinubu for his foresight. This singular decision will address multiple challenges, including banditry and herder-farmer clashes, while boosting economic growth,” he stated.

Yakubu emphasized that the ministry would enable Nigeria to fully exploit the value chain in the livestock sector, thereby enhancing foreign exchange earnings and creating job opportunities for skilled artisans.

He explained that animal husbandry is central to maximizing the quality of hides and skins, a key product in the leather industry.

“The development of the value chain begins with how we rear animals. To obtain hides and skins of the best quality, there must be a scientific and technological approach, which this ministry can provide,” he added.

Yakubu also revealed NILEST’s intention to collaborate closely with the new ministry, stressing that hides and skins account for approximately 15% of the value of an entire animal.

He noted that the leather industry currently generates over $3 billion in revenue and holds significant potential for further growth.

“We are interested in how animals are reared and at what age we can get the best quality hides and skins. There must be a department within the ministry to oversee this aspect,” Yakubu said.

He called on stakeholders and Nigerians to support the government in ensuring the smooth take-off of the ministry, which he believes will play a pivotal role in transforming the livestock and leather industries for the country’s benefit.
